Résumé · Rev. 29 · Still Here
\n

Rob Conery

\n
Senior engineer. Very senior. Not like that. Let me in.
\n
\n
\n
Honolulu, Hawaii
\n \n \n
Age: a number your HR software isn't allowed to ask for. It asked anyway.
\n
\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Objective
\n

To be hired by someone under 35 and never, ever bring it up.

\n

I have 29 years of shipping software and I'd like to spend the next few doing exactly that, quietly, without anyone having to hear how it used to be done. It used to be done worse. There. That's the last you'll hear of it. I'm not asking for a title with \"Distinguished\" in it. I'm asking for a laptop, a ticket, and about forty-eight hours before you notice the ticket is closed. What follows is a legally binding list of the things I will not do, say, or visibly think, as a condition of employment.

\n
\n\n
\n
The Pledge
\n

I solemnly swear I will not:

\n
    \n
  1. 01Say \"well, in my day.\" My day is today. I checked. It's on the calendar you invited me to and then rescheduled four times.
  2. \n
  3. 02Explain what a modem sounded like, what a floppy disk was for, or why the save icon looks like that. You've seen the memes. We're good.
  4. \n
  5. 03Point out that the thing you just invented had a different name in 2004 and shipped on a CD. I'll write it in a notebook. The notebook stays home.
  6. \n
  7. 04Say \"we tried that.\" Even if we did. Even if it went pear-shaped in a way that is still, frankly, hilarious.
  8. \n
  9. 05Have opinions about tabs, spaces, microservices, or your framework out loud. I will have them. I'll scream them into a pillow like a professional.
  10. \n
  11. 06Post \"Thrilled to announce\" about anything. I do not rise at 4am. I do not have a morning routine. I have coffee, and I am not publicly grateful for it.
  12. \n
  13. 07Reference Fight Club more than once a quarter. First rule, et cetera.
  14. \n
  15. 08Reply-all. Ever. I've seen things. I've been things.
  16. \n
  17. 09Mention that I wrote a computer science book that sold 30,000 copies, or that my podcast was the number one tech podcast, or that I was a public face of a Microsoft product. None of that is relevant and I would never bring it up. See above, where I didn't.
  18. \n
  19. 10Start a sentence with \"kids these days.\" Several of the kids are my boss now, and they're doing fine. Mostly. I'd love to help with the parts that aren't. Quietly. From a desk. That you give me.
  20. \n

Experience
\n

All of it real. Lightly seasoned.

\n
\n
\n
CTO, Red:4 Aerospace · Big Machine, Kōlea2025 to now
\n

\"Independent,\" which is what unemployment is called once it has a Stripe account. Built Kōlea, a complete newsletter and sales platform, alone, end to end. A 24-year-old founder would call that \"a lean team with 10x leverage\" and raise on it. I call it a Tuesday. It has a slop meter that catches machine-sounding writing, which I'm told is \"not a moat.\" It works, though. Things I build tend to.

\n
\n
\n
Microsoft · Learn TV, then Copilot with the VS Code team2018 to 2025
\n

Led engineering for Learn TV, then built Copilot training and delivered it to 800 Azure Core engineers at a time. By your own job description this makes me \"AI-native.\" I was born in the 1900s and I am AI-native. Both are true and I'd love to discuss neither. I'd love to discuss your backlog.

\n
\n
\n
Pluralsight2014 to 2016
\n

Arrived by acquisition. Learned that \"synergy\" is the noise a company makes right before it reorganizes you. Left to start Big Machine, the only employer that has never asked me to do a take-home.

\n
\n
\n
Co-founder, Tekpub2009 to 2014
\n

One of the first video learning platforms for developers, with James Avery, back when \"creator\" wasn't a job and \"content\" was something a stomach had. Acquired by Pluralsight. I'd call it an exit but I'm not allowed to until I own a vest.

\n
\n
\n
Microsoft · ASP.NET team, first tour2006 to 2009
\n

Scott Guthrie called me personally. Worked on ASP.NET MVC with Scott Hanselman, Phil Haack and Guthrie; the four of us wrote Professional ASP.NET MVC 1.0 and called ourselves the Five Heads. Hairline joke. I get exactly one per résumé and that was it.

\n
\n
\n
Independent contractor · Hawaii2004 to 2006
\n

Moved to Hawaii to quit tech and drive boats. PayPal, Visa, Starbucks and Google kept calling. Wrote the ASP.NET Commerce Starter Kit from a lanai: remote-first, two decades before it went on the careers page next to the ping-pong table.

\n
\n
\n
CTO, a healthcare consultancy2002 to 2004
\n

Took a quieter job to be home with my kid. Your screening software will flag this as a \"gap.\" Your screening software has never met a toddler. The toddler is now an adult who ships code and has never once ghosted a recruiter, because I raised him right.

\n
\n
\n
Co-founder and CTO, Persistent Web1997 to 2002
\n

Grew a web consultancy to 30+ developers through the dot-com boom, then through the part after. So I've already lived through one \"this changes everything.\" I'm on my second. Still here. Still shipping. Not posting about it.

\n
\n
\n
GeologistFive years, ending 1997
\n

Rocks, mostly. Also the office geek who put the lab data into Access and built the reports, which is the whole reason you're reading this. I pivoted before pivoting was a slide.
